Ever since Julian started daycare I have dreaded the day he would get sick. The first couple of weeks were good, and then one day I picked him up and he was super stuffy and kept sneezing. I knew the dreaded "first cold" had made its appearance. Lucky for us it was the weekend, so we were able to combat this cold at home and not have to miss out on school or work.
Fast forward to this past weekend and Julian is sick once again. Lucky for us, we already have some products that we know are going to be working great when the baby gets sick. I want to share those products with you today in case you happen to encounter yourself in a similar situation with your baby.
I first want to share the symptoms that Julian has been experiencing. He would get warm but not actually have a fever. He was also sneezing constantly, he had a cough with lots of mucus and phlegm (tmi sorry!), very irritable and fussy, and he was very clingy to me. The cough and mucus was enough for me to really my baby was sick and I definitely needed to do something to make him feel better. Sadly, this time around we took the weekend to try and treat his cold, but now, we are on Friday and baby is still not feeling too well.
I do want to say that we have already been to the doctor, they checked him out and ruled out anything serious. We were assured that it is nothing but a viral cold and were told to continue doing what we are doing and he will eventually begin to feel better.
The first item I want to talk about is something that I recommend every single one of my mommy friends buy or put on their registry list and that is the Exergen Thermometer. The reason I love this thermometer so much is because it takes the temperature through the forehead and there is no need to be placing it under the arm or tongue which we all know is close to impossible with a baby. This thermometer is amazing, quick and super easy to use.
To keep on the same page of non-medicinal items that I swear by I next want to talk about the Safety 1st Humidifier. My sister was the one that recommended we use one because she really believed it would work for us. We place it on a dresser close to where Julian is sleeping and set it on a medium-is setting and let it go all night. I swear to you guys that evenI wake up feeling like I can breath better.
I also love putting some drops of the Gurunanda "Breath Easy" oil blend in the water n the humidifier. I am by no means one of those people that is obsessed with essential oils and I do not buy them regularly, but in researching things I could do to help my poor baby I came across the idea of oils. This particular blend I found at Walmart for under $5 and I swear to y'all that it really opens up the nasal passages and helps breath easy! I want to say it is the peppermint that is in the blend but I am not 100% sure that I am correct about that. Either way, it works amazing and I recommend that you try it out if you have a congested baby.
Now I know that it is a controversial topic to give your baby medicine. I am no expert by any means so please consult your pediatrician before administering any medicine to your infant. That being said, I swear up and down by two medicines. The first one is the Zarbee's Naturals baby Cough Syrup. I like to give him this medicine during the day to help with the nasty cough that he has developed and I promise you guys it works. I try to not give him any more than two dozes a day though. Not for any particular reason, just personal preference. The next medicine I want to share has been by far my number, one holy grail, go to medicine for Julian. The Hyland's baby Tiny Cold Tablets are a miracle worker. Give your baby two teeny tiny tablets at bed time and it takes their symptoms away for about six hours!! How amazing is that? If you have a sick baby I need you to run out and grab these and give them a try.
Lastly, the Matys All Natural Baby Chest Rub has been an item that we have loved since the first time Julian got sick. I can’t say with certainty that it actually does anything for him but I can say I have seen him a little more calm after we apply it on his chest and it seems to be something he likes. I also like to apply this on the bottom of his feet and then put some socks on him before bed time. Like I said it may not do much but I have definitely seen a calming effect from it.
What are your go to, must have items for when your little ones are sick?
